Description
[CHODERLOS DE LACLOS (P.-A.-F.)]. Les liaisons dangereuses. Letters collected from one society, and published for the instruction of others. By C*** de L***. London, n.p., 1796 [i.e. c. 1812]. 2 volumes in-8, 415 pp. + [2] folios, 398 pp., in French, with plates, recent old-pink half-basane, smooth spine, gilt lettering and volume numbers, black basane title labels, edges formerly marbled (stained only on the title pages). A charming counterfeit of the second illustrated edition (London, 1796), produced around 1812. According to Cohen, the illustrations consist of the same plates – namely 2 frontispieces and 13 figures engraved from drawings by Monnet, Mlle Gérard and Fragonard the Younger – some of which have been retouched here by Delvaux. A fine copy, carefully prepared in a simple binding. (Cohen, 235–236).
