Description
[DORAT, Claude-Joseph]. New Fables. The Hague and Paris, Delalain, 1773. 2 volumes in 1 volume, 8vo, XXII pp., [1] fol. (half-title), 309 pp., [1] fol. (table of contents), French, plates, illustrations, havana morocco, spine with 5 raised bands decorated with a gold dotted pattern, title and date in gold, panels decorated with small ironwork, triple gold fillet on the covers, double gold fillet on the edges, interior lace, edges gilt on endpapers [Condition] (very slight scuffing to one cap and two corners, sporadic foxing). First printing of this charming edition. ‘This work, which rivals *Les Baisers* in perfection, is Marillier’s masterpiece, in terms of the finesse of its execution and the wit that pervades all the lovely illustrations that adorn it.’ (Cohen). The illustrations consist of two frontispieces engraved by De Ghendt, a vignette on the title page, a plate engraved by Delaunay, 99 headpieces and 99 tailpieces, all after Marillier. As is often the case, the plate engraved by Delaunay appears only once and is not repeated at the beginning of the second part. A fine copy, elegantly bound by Paul-Charles Allô (1824–1890), who has tastefully adorned the panels with a bird-motif embossing. (Cohen 313–316).
