Description
[Civil Engineering]. EXPLANATION OF THE WORKS undertaken for the construction of the Tonnelle, or Underpass beneath the Thames, between Rotherhithe and Wapping, with a view to establishing a permanent link between the two banks of the river. London, Warrington, 1836. Small oblong 12mo (approx. 10 x 13.5 cm), paperback (slightly foxed, slight staining). A very rare first edition of this French-language account of the construction of the Thames Tunnel in London, the first known tunnel built beneath a navigable river. It comprises 24 pages, including the title page, and 9 plates, of which 3 are fold-outs and one is a schematic diagram. The Thames Tunnel, one of the most innovative engineering feats of the first half of the 19th century, was constructed between 1825 and 1842 according to the plans of Sir Marc Isambert Brunel (1769–1849), engineer, architect and Franco-British inventor. The plates show panoramas, cross-sections and detailed views of the tunnel.
