Description
[French Revolution]. [Industry, trade, navy]. GUILLIAUD (Christophe). Treatise on the utilisation of all metals in the department of the Loire; a region which nature has designated for us to surpass, in terms of quality, goods of the same kind manufactured by the English and the Germans. [Followed by]: - Extract from a treatise on the means of raising all of France’s manufacturing and trade to the highest degree of splendour and public utility. [Followed by]: 3. Improvements to the construction of the French Navy’s vessels. Lyon and Paris, Cutty and Du Pont, 1796–1797. 3 parts in 1 vol. in-4, [2] f., 88 p.; [1] fol., 50 pp.; [1] fol., 18 pp., contemporary havana half-basane, vellum corners, smooth spine, gilt fillets, salmon-coloured title label (minor rubbing to the spine and edges, a few rare foxing spots). A rare collection of three treatises, originally printed separately and here brought together by their author under a general title for presentation to the authorities. Christophe Guilliaud (1755–1821), a manufacturer in Saint-Étienne who sold hardware and weapons, contributed to the improvement and expansion of the arms factories in Saint-Étienne. A revolutionary, later hostile to the Convention, he was arrested upon the surrender of Lyon, imprisoned in Orange, and sentenced to death; he was spared by the fall of Robespierre (according to D. Saint-Pierre, entry in the Académie des SBLA de Lyon). (Polak 4229 for the third memoir).
