Description
[City map]. [Brussels]. BASIRE (Isaac), [engraver]. Brussels, a large and beautiful city in the Duchy of Brabant, subject to the Queen of Hungary... No place, no publisher, [London, Knapton, 1745]. Coloured copperplate engraving, approx. 38 x 48 cm. (slight crease marks; slight browning at the margins).
A fine copy of this map of Brussels, fully coloured. It was published as part of a work, as indicated by the inscription engraved in the margin: ‘For Mr Tindal’s Continuation of Mr Rapin’s History of England’. In the lower left-hand corner, the title in a rococo cartouche; in the lower right-hand corner, a key to the 82 places shown on the map.
Provenance: Victor George Spencer (1934–2017), 3rd Viscount Churchill and 5th Baron Churchill, by descent. V. G. Spencer inherited this map from his father-in-law, Sir Lancelot Oliphant, who was appointed Ambassador to Brussels and Minister Plenipotentiary to Luxembourg in December 1939. Interned by the Nazis between 1940 and 1941, he subsequently returned to Great Britain, where he continued to serve as ambassador to the governments-in-exile of Belgium and Luxembourg until 1944.
