Description
[Architecture]. [Paris; Bois de Boulogne]. ORY. Design for a music centre and a performance hall in the Bois de Boulogne. Five prints. Hand-coloured prints. 53 x 107.7 cm (excluding the last one, which is smaller), in frames measuring 57 x 112 cm each. Each frame bears a label reading ‘ORY, Studios d’Architecture’ (studios founded in 1979 by Jean-Jacques Ory). Waterstains.
a) Aerial perspective view of the project with the city in the background. (Glass broken at one corner).
b) Two cross-sections on the same sheet, with elements glued in place. These show exhibition and gallery spaces, a central mall and, beneath it, a music centre or foyer and a 650-seat auditorium with a stage, technical areas, control room, orchestra pit, set storage and dressing rooms. Beneath the entrance to the music centre or foyer are two storeys of car park.
c) Ground floor plan, with elements pasted in. The square-shaped building features a central hall and a large temporary exhibition space at its centre, surrounded by galleries housing permanent exhibitions. A wide approach leads to the entrance, whilst the exit opens onto a large esplanade covered by a canopy structure, providing space for receptions and the extension of exhibitions.
d) Basement plan. The Maison de la Musique / Foyer is situated beneath the temporary exhibition space, and the auditorium beneath the esplanade. Surrounding these are a bar, a cafeteria, several studios and control rooms, and areas for performers to gather.
e) Site plan, with elements pasted in. 41.1 x 96 cm visible, under a passe-partout. Partial map of the Bois de Boulogne, showing the Jardin d’Acclimatation, the equestrian centre and the bowling alley, Avenue du Mahatma Gandhi, the road from Porte Dauphine to Porte des Sablons and that from Porte des Sablons to Porte Maillot, the Pavillon d’Armenonville and Avenue de Longchamp. Boulevard Maurice Barrès forms the upper boundary of the map. This project was intended to be situated in the eastern part of the Jardin d’Acclimatation, between the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires and the Allée des Érables.
This proposal for a ‘Maison de la Musique’ – featuring permanent exhibition galleries, temporary exhibition spaces and a large underground auditorium – certainly dates from the early 1980s, before the Parc de la Villette was chosen to house the Cité de la Musique and the Musée de la Musique.
