Description
[Architecture]. [Orléans]. THORY (A.); after Charles Pensée. ‘Former Hôtel-Dieu in Orléans, as seen in 1842’ (Loiret). [Second half of the 19th century]. Watercolour. 39 x 53 cm (image size), in a frame measuring 69.5 x 83 cm. Pinholes. Minor loss of gilding on the left-hand edge of the frame. Reproduction signed ‘A. Thory after C. Pensée’ of a watercolour held in the General Inventory of the Centre-Val-de-Loire Region. The inventory’s artwork file (item IM45003302, examined in 2011 as part of a survey of the regional hospital heritage of Orléans) states that ‘A watercolour bearing great similarities, also painted by Charles Pensée (1799–1871), signed and dated 1842, is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Orléans (inv. 941).’ The former Hôtel-Dieu in Orléans, which had fallen into disrepair, was demolished between 1845 and 1848 in order to clear the area around the cathedral, in accordance with the alignment plan proposed by Gisors in 1813. The watercolour shows, behind the building, the two towers of Sainte-Croix Cathedral and its former spire. This view was reproduced as a lithograph by Lemercier in the book *Histoire architecturale d’Orléans* (Orléans, Gatineau and Darnault-Morand, 1849).
