‘House of the Arquebusiers, Bruges 1877’.
Watercolour. 32 x 13.3 cm (image size), in a frame measuring 52 x 32 cm. Some loss of stucco on the frame. And a few foxing spots. Title and date in the lower left-hand corner; signed in the lower right-hand corner: ‘Cassien-Bernard’.
A charming view of the turret of the Saint Sebastian Archers’ Guild (Schuttersgilde Sint Sebastiaan) in Bruges.
Founded in the 14th century and still active today, this guild is the oldest known sports association in the world. It moved to its current location in 1572 and has been extended several times over the centuries. The guild’s buildings were restored in the 19th century in a Neo-Gothic style by the architect Louis Delacenserie.
Joseph Cassien-Bernard was a French architect originally from Isère. He studied at the Écoles des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and Paris, where he was a pupil of Charles Garnier. Among his other major works and contributions, he notably designed the Théâtre du Trianon and the Pont Alexandre III in Paris.
