Description
[Manuscript]. [LA BRÈTE (Jean de)]. My Uncle and My Parish Priest. Manuscript copied in 1910. In-4, contemporary midnight-blue half-basane, plain spine, title and gilt lettering.
Comprising 170 unnumbered folios written in ink on both sides, in the same hand, very legible.
A touching testament to the great success enjoyed in its day by this first work by the novelist Alice Cherbonnel (1858–1945). Published in 1889 under the pseudonym Jean de la Brète, it was awarded the Prix Montyon by the Académie française, adapted for the cinema as early as 1938, and for the theatre, and reprinted repeatedly during the first half of the 20th century.
It has not been fully collated against the published text (digitised on Gallica), but the beginning, the end and several sample pages suggest that it is a complete copy.
