Gaston Doumergue (1863-1937), radical statesman from the Gard, President of the Republic from 1924 to 1931 after an important parliamentary and ministerial career under the Third Republic. A lawyer and several times minister and then president of the Senate, he was a figure of Republican moderation. Recalled to power during the political crisis of 1934, he briefly led a government of national unity before retiring for good.
