Description
GAYOT, Eugène.
Atlas statistique de la production des chevaux en France, document de l'administration des haras, pour servir à l'histoire naturelle agricole des races chevalines du pays.
Paris, Imprimerie Administrative de Paul Dupont, (1850-1851).
In plano (44 x 63 cm), unpaginated (29 ff., 31 plates in black and 27 maps). Green half-chagrin with corners, spine with 6 raised bands, author and title gilt, richly decorated gilt boxes, double gilt fillet on covers (binding a little bleached, some angular spotting).
Elegant contemporary binding signed Petit successeur Simier.
The only edition of this rare atlas of the horse breeds of France.
Complete with very beautiful lithographs representing the French breeds, pure, crossbred or improved, with several subjects for each. This "considerable and very well documented work (...) is not often found" (Menessier de la Lance, I, 537).
The races of each of the 26 districts are represented by a coloured map and a finely lithographed plate after Lalaisse (with the exception of Tarbes, Pompadour, Napoléon-Vendée, Lamballe and Langonnet, illustrated by two plates, and the map of Arles, followed by a map of Perpignan).
Comprising 27 maps and 31 plates (most with two figures) lithographed in black on prepared paper. Title page enlarged with a label from the Veuve Bouchard-Huzard, dated 1851, pasted on (the only edition dates from 1850 and was distributed until 1852 with an added label).
With a comparative table of the horse population between 1840 and 1850 and a sheet showing details of stallion deposits in the various districts.
EQUIDS. ZOOTECHNICS. HIPPOLOGY. SECOND EMPIRE.
