Description
CELINE Louis-Ferdinand: Complete manuscript of his letter to the judges. Defence statement drafted by CELINE whilst in custody in Copenhagen, Denmark. Sent to France in March 1947 via his Danish solicitor, Maître MIKKELSEN, to his French solicitors, Maître André DAMIEN and Maître Jean-Louis TIXIER-VIGNANCOUR. This defence statement was typed up in France by her lawyers’ firms and sent to the President of the Court of Justice of the Seine (to Commissioner SELTENSPERGER) and to a number of journalists and public figures. An English version will also be produced for international journalists.
This is the original manuscript kept by his lawyer. Dated 27 March 1949, 35 large in-8 pages with corrections and additions. The set is presented in a folder and a red half-maroquin case, with a spine featuring five raised bands that have faded, and title labels on black leather. This document is doubly significant: not only for the writer’s defence of his stance during the war, but also for the crossings-out and deletions in the text when compared with the final typewritten version.
