Description
[16th-century MANUSCRIPT]. [HOSPITALLERS OF SAINT JOHN. ORDER OF MALTA].
[Notarial minutes and notes for the diocese of Sarlat]
(c. 1500–1570)
Large quarto. (280) folios (including 89, 127, 139–143, 181 and 262 blank pages). Soft-sewn reused vellum, with flaps, showing brown ink writing—possibly from the 15th century—visible on the reverse of the binding (vellum tarnished and soiled, slightly shrunk with small losses; quires slightly out of order; edges of the leaves worn, corners occasionally gnawed, traces of water damage or stains on a few quires, small lateral losses of text on the first two folios, one small quire detached but no loss of text overall).
An important 16th-century notarial manuscript from the Périgord Noir, written in Latin and Latin Farsi, in brown ink, by several scribes.
Approximately between 30 and 50 lines per folio with a margin left on the left-hand side. There are several fairly elaborate hand-signed initials, including Maltese crosses, as well as several Maltese crosses drawn in ink in the margins. A few initials are roughly calligraphic.
Occasionally, there are numerous annotations in the margins to the left of the text. There are crossed-out sections, corrections or line deletions.
ecclesiastical documents
the ‘Confraternity of the Holy Spirit of Saliniac’ (Salignac, in the Dordogne), the families of Raymond and Pierre de Frayssinet, and a text written in a mixed language (Latin-Occitan)
It appears that the documents were compiled into the quires at a later date on vellum, as they do not always follow a chronological order. They were no doubt ‘numbered’ at that time using a consecutive folio numbering system in Roman capital letters, which appears in the top left-hand corner of the folios. The document may form part of a series, as the numbering begins at CCC on the first folio and ends at CCCCXL.
wills or confessions
sometimes numerous annotations in the margins left free to the left of the text
