Description
[AMICORUM]. [Two objects symbolising friendship from the late 18th–early 19th centuries] - An 18th–early 19th-century red maroquin leather wallet with a long grain, featuring an embroidered silk lining celebrating a friendship. In large in-12 format. Covers adorned with a gilt scroll border, small floral motifs in the spandrels, ivory silk endpapers and a double pocket with pink and white silk flaps, featuring embroidered sprigs within frames and decorated with embroidery. On the reverse sides: a large motif featuring a double heart pierced by an arrow above a mountain and a fountain on one side, and a motif of doves on a branch on the other. On the inside covers, the book is embroidered with hair to form, on one side, the phrase ‘L’Amitié en fait le prix’ and, on the other, the initials ‘ME’ and ‘CC’ framing the number ‘108’, with two letters ‘L’ completing the design. With a bookplate consisting of a piece of green morocco leather in a mosaic pattern on the upper cover, ‘Caunois, eldest son / A Auxerre’ in gold embossing, underlined with a gold fillet and scrollwork (scuffs, stains and small areas of flaking on the cover; the silk is slightly tarnished or lightly oxidised). The item most likely belonged to a member of the Auxerre family of clockmakers established between the late 18th and 19th centuries. The supra libris features the signature found on their clocks. -[Antique green Russian leather box with notebook]. (Germany or Central Europe, early 19th century). In-12 format (10.5 x 17 x 2 cm), modelled on an early 19th-century binding. Green Russian leather, smooth spine decorated with rollers, links and a floral symbol on a cross-hatched background, all gilded, covers adorned with a gilded floral garland forming a frame, with a geometric motif at the centre resembling a gilded chain encircling a diamond shape featuring stars in the spandrels. A charming, intimate object of the period. Gilded title on the spine: Gevidmet der Freundsch[aft] (Dedicated to friendship). A lovely antique box modelled on a book and containing sheets, no doubt intended for a Liber or Album amicorum. A notebook of loose blank leaves, with gilt edges, and a sheet of heavy paper embroidered with a pretty floral design – the handiwork of a lady or young lady – radiating from a heart, a symbol of piety or affection (with a few small foxing spots). On the inside cover, lined with speckled handmade paper, is a coloured, round-shaped engraved vignette depicting *Paul and Virginie*. A fine example.
