-PLAN of the various manoeuvres to be carried out before the King at the Camp of Verberie in 1769 by the division under the command of the Count of Rochambeau.
Château de Compiègne.
At that time, the Count of Rochambeau commanded the 3rd Division of 14 battalions, comprising in particular the regiments of Auvergne, Touraine, Beauce and Limousin. A collection of contemporary plans illustrating these manoeuvres is held by the BnF
In July 1769, King Louis XV assembled a large force of royal troops on the Verberie plain (near the Château de Compiègne) to carry out major military training manoeuvres
Small quarto. Contemporary red morocco binding bearing the coat of arms of Louis XV (the fleurs-de-lis have been scraped off in the spirit of republican censorship). A manual of tactics from the Maison du Roi for the training of future heads of the royal households.
This copy has quite clearly been used as a sketchbook by one or more young children: graffiti in sepia ink, almost contemporary, and a few scribbles in blue pencil.
