Description
MARLES, Jean de. Paris: Past and Present, a history of France divided into twelve periods, applied to the twelve arrondissements of Paris, and illustrated by the monuments of this famous city. Brussels, Société Encyclographique, 1839. 3 volumes of text in 1 large quarto volume of 500–531–552 pp. and a quarto atlas of 276 black-and-white plates in a serpentine binding. Contemporary blue half-chagrin with corners; smooth spine decorated in the Romantic style with gilt ironwork (spine and covers slightly faded, lower joint of the text split, edges, caps and corners rubbed, foxing). The atlas comprises a title page and 276 black aquatint-engraved plates, numbered 1 to 271, with 10 ‘bis’ plates, two plates bearing the number 71 and 5 plates each comprising two separately numbered figures. A rare and very complete copy of the atlas. Its appeal lies in the fine aquatint illustrations depicting Parisian life. A fine copy.
