Description
[RAPHAEL Sanzio of Urbino].
Logge del Vaticano.
Rome, published by Niccola de Antoni, (1802).
Folio. In sheets, entirely engraved; title-dedication page featuring a large integrated overview of the Logge with an oval portrait of Raphael in a medallion and 13 plates engraved by Carlo Lasinio after Raphael (numbered II–VIII, I–VI) (some soiling but a good copy).
Giovanni Balzar, Luca Comparini.
A series of large black etchings, engraved by Carlo Lasinio after Raphael (numbered II–VIII, I–VI)
High-quality engravings based on Raphael’s masterpiece in the Vatican.
Not listed in the usual reference works: the entry for the copy held by the National Art Library states that the plates were engraved by Lasinio (1757–1839), under the direction of Francesco Rainaldi, after drawings by Pietro Camporesi (1726–1781), which were themselves based on Raphael’s originals.
The entry concerning the only copy ever sold at auction mentions a title page and 14 plates, but this information is probably incorrect, as both the NAL copy and the Library of Congress copy contain ‘a total of 14 leaves, including the “title page”’.
