Description
[ROUSSEAU, Jean-Baptiste]. Epigrams illustrated with engravings depicting the most licentious and libertine subjects. (No place, no publisher), 1791. In-12, (3)-34 pp., including half-title and title page and 1 blank folio, on hand-made laid paper, 9 black etchings, each depicting 2 scenes. 19th-century Bradel half-percale binding in grey, with the title running lengthwise and gilt fleurons, untrimmed (minor soiling; spine and second cover slightly sun-faded; margins and lower edge soiled and slightly frayed on the half-title page and 2 folios, a printing defect has left a 1 cm wide blank strip across p. 14). First separate edition and first illustrated edition of the ‘Licentious and Satirical Epigrams’, attributed to the 18th-century lyric poet. A very rare edition dealing in particular with the obscene corruption of the clergy. Illustrated with 18 unsigned figures, explicitly very risqué, on 9 black etchings, each vignette bearing the number of the corresponding epigram. An 18th-century French author regarded as the foremost lyric poet of his time, Jean-Baptiste Rousseau (1671–1741) died in exile, venting his vitriol in these Epigrammes, which are still highly regarded and sought after today. No copies held by the CCFr or WorldCat. Not listed in Lacombe, Monglond or Pia. A famous poet and playwright regarded as the foremost lyric poet of his era, Jean-Baptiste Rousseau (1671–1741) died in exile in Brussels, his spirit still brimming with fiery indignation... It was probably their strongly anti-clerical and critical tone that prompted this particular edition to be published during the Revolution. CURIOSA. Cohen, 902 (with a slightly different title). Gay-Lemonnyer, 1, 125. Gérard Nordmann Library (Christie’s 2006 auction), I, 361.
