Description
AUTHORS and PUBLISHERS. 20th century. LOT of LAS. A substantial lot of autograph documents by modern authors and critics. -Alphonse de CHATEAUBRIANT. Autograph letter. Le Petit Portail (Loire-Atlantique), 26 January 1914. 2 ff. A personal letter written with style, in which he discusses his state of mind and his delight at corresponding once more with a friend and kindred spirit, someone well-versed in writing and the problems faced by writers. He mentions his forthcoming move to Versailles, where he will in fact spend the war, and enquires about his writing and a work he is reportedly preparing on Napoleon. A substantial body of correspondence between the author and Romain Rolland is known to exist (L’Un et l’autre, 1914–1944, Albin Michel), which begins precisely in 1914. Rolland did indeed write a short pamphlet on Napoleon that was never published as a book, and it is conceivable that he was the recipient of this letter. Alphonse van Bredenbeck de Châteaubriant (1877–1951), a Catholic writer and winner of the 1911 Prix Goncourt, but an intellectual who fraternised with the Nazis (he was sentenced to death in absentia) whilst having been a supporter of Dreyfus. -COPPEE François (1842–1908), French poet, playwright and novelist. 2 autograph letters, in brown ink, comprising 2 pages in small in-12 format, from ‘François Coppée’ to ‘My dear Jeantet’, La Fraizière, near Mandres (S.-et-O.), (undated). And a postcard addressed to the printed address at La Fraizière, near Mandres (S.-et-O.), (undated). Very fine autograph signatures. In the letter to his publisher, he writes: ‘Here is my article; as you can see, I am ahead of schedule, and I would be most grateful if you could send me a proof without delay.’ Regarding the writer Jean Blaize, he writes: ‘I consider this young man to be one of the finest among the newcomers […].’ Minor stains or imperfections. -LITERARY REVIEWS. Lot of 2 autograph items, in-12 format. A small manuscript of 7 pp. on grey paper, *Chronique sur les Livres / La Critique*, undated (early 20th century). Fine, legible handwriting, with crossings-out and corrections on the front. A series of notes, a sort of review of the following works: *Le Quarantième fauteuil* by Henry; *La Vie d’Ernest Renan* by M. J. Darmesteter; and *Études de littérature européennes* by Joseph Texte. A handwritten letter by Paul de Saint-Victor, French essayist and literary critic (1825–1881), on the subject of theatre, addressed to a woman. Undated. -BARRES FAMILY. Lot of autograph items. -Maurice BARRES. (1862–1923), writer and politician. An engraved visiting card with autograph, (no place, no date). In-16 format with a small autograph in ink. His card as Member of Parliament for Meurthe-et-Moselle. Sent as a token of thanks to Mrs Daniel Lesueur. -BARRES, Philippe (1896–1975), journalist and politician, son of Maurice Barrès. 2 handwritten letters addressed to the journalist André Chaumeix. Charmes, 5 November 1923 and (undated), Saturday 5 August 1923. 2 pp in-8 and 3 pp in-12. “Sir, I have received a letter from Monsieur de Régnier which fills me with the highest hopes (...) I shall return to Paris on 9 November and shall be delighted to express my gratitude to you in person [...]”. “Sir, please excuse me for not attending the meeting I had requested.” Enclosed is the first page of his book, *La guerre à vingt ans*, dedicated by the author to the writer François Porché; “To Mr François Porché, in memory of my father, and as a token of admiration and sympathy” (no place), 15 July 1924. -Pierre MILLE (1864–1941), French writer and journalist. Lot of 3 autograph letters. Various formats, including one on blue paper with a stamp and address, 27 May 1911; a letter with a mourning border, 21 June 1912; and a CDV, 2 March 1932. Despite the time gap between them (1912 and 1932), two of the autographs are addressed to the same person, a ‘dear Master’, and consist of praise intermingled with reflections on writing or the difficulty of writing for an author. Perhaps the recipient of the 1911 letter was Léon Hennique (1850–1935), a French naturalist novelist, playwright and screenwriter born in Guadeloupe, and a friend of Maupassant and the Goncourt brothers. Mille’s name is also associated with the Pierre Mille Prize for best reportage, awarded by the French Overseas Press Union to recognise a journalist working in the French-language print or broadcast media. Also included: - FAURE, Gabriel. Writer (1877–1962). Letter from the author (L.A.S.), Paris, 6 January 17. 1 p., in-8. DORGELES, Roland, writer (1885–1973). 2 letters to Mr Dubeux, Paris [1919] and (no place, no date). 3 pp., in-4. He congratulates his correspondent on his ‘study in the *Revue mondiale* [ ]’; in the second letter, he mentions sending him a photograph; FARGUE Léon-Paul, poet (1876–1947) Fragment of an autograph manuscript (no place, no date). 2 pp., in-4. Notes in pencil: ‘Le Cauchemar au vernissage’ From Paris.
