Description
Maurice DENIS. Theories 1890–1910. From Symbolism and Gauguin towards a new classical order. Paris, Bibliothèque de l’Occident, 1912. Large 8vo (25.6 x 16.7 cm). (2)-VIII-270-(3) pp., partly untrimmed. Paperback, printed green cover (spine slightly faded). First edition. Dedicated by Maurice Denis: ‘To my friend L. Moret / Maurice Denis’. A fine copy. Limited edition printed on fine paper. Brings together Maurice Denis’s art reviews, originally published in journals or exhibition catalogues. Louis Moret (active in the first half of the 20th century, often associated with Saint-Germain-en-Laye) produced woodcuts and translations of works by Maurice Denis, notably religious or sacred compositions by the Nabi painter. Provenance: from the library of Pierre Séjourné. Pierre Séjourné (1930–1993), a Parisian bookseller with a passion for bookbinding, a flautist and an enthusiast of literature and classical music, moved in both the Parisian artistic and literary circles and the world of the Decorative Arts and their schools through his uncle, the architect and member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Albert Laprade. Also an author and actor, he devoted himself to writing and performing his own plays, which were mainly staged in the Paris region.
