Description
ELUARD, Paul.
LAS. [Dada Manifesto].
Paris, 21 September 1920.
Autograph letter to Frédéric Lefèvre, Paris, 21 September 1920. 1 p. In-8 (upper left-hand corner missing), envelope retained.
Eluard states: ‘I shall run your errand to Aragon and Picabia today. As for Morand, he is not in Paris and I do not have his address’.
He goes on to provide a bibliographical reference (F. S. Flint, *Some French Poets of To-Day*. *Monthly Chapbook*, Vol. 1, No. 4, The Poetry Bookshop, London, 1919) and the bookshop where his correspondent can obtain the work.
Frédéric Lefèvre (1889–1949), writer, editor-in-chief of *Les Nouvelles Littéraires* (1922–1949) and literary critic.
He continues, ‘Are you familiar with Tzara’s 1918 Dada Manifesto, the most valuable of them all? You could read it at the Sans Pareil, as all issues of *Dada* must be out of print.’ The 1918 Dada Manifesto was read out during a performance on 23 July 1918 at the Zunfthaus in der Meise in Zurich. Revised and republished alongside six other manifestos, it is intended as an anti-manifesto.
‘Its aim is polemical: ‘I am destroying the pigeonholes of the brain and those of social organisation.’ Tzara rejects the state, the family, religion and the academies wholesale” (Abastado, Cl. The ‘Dada Manifesto 1918’: a merry-go-round. In: Littérature, no. 39, 1980. Manifestos. pp. 39–46).
