Description
[NATURAL SCIENCES and HORTICULTURE].
Set of 8 volumes, 19th century, in various conditions and formats.
- The Art of Using Fruit and of Making All Sorts of Jams and Liqueurs at Little Cost, a follow-up to *The Country Cook*.
Paris: Audot, 1818. In-12, (4)-VIII-155 pp. Fine, lightly speckled fawn calfskin (19th century), gilt coat of arms in the centre of the covers, gilt edges on marbled paper (spine missing, corners worn, second cover slightly rubbed, a few scattered foxing spots but interior remains fresh).
A rare first edition. Often overlooked in bibliographies, which cite only the reprint (by Quentin). Complete with the line drawing illustrating a cross-section of an underground domestic icehouse, by Susémilh.
From the library of Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Sicile, Duchess of Berry, bearing one of her gilt stamps embossed on the covers (similar to OHR, 2519, no. 2).
As this volume does not bear the ex libris of ‘La Bibliothèque du château de Rosny’, it forms part of the second phase of her life, the titles of which can be found in her posthumous sales.
