Description
JOSÉPHINE BAKER (1906–1975) POSTER FOR THE SHOW ‘JOSÉPHINE’ AT BOBINO, 1975. WITH AN AUTOGRAPHED DEDICATION BY ANDRÉ LEVASSEUR Dedicated: ‘To Philippe Pique / my lifelong friend / A. Levasseur / 5 February 1980’ Show presented by Jean-Claude Dauzonne and directed by André Levasseur, with the support of the S.B.M. (Société des Bains de Mer) of Monte Carlo. Photography and graphic design by Guy Ventouillac. Poster: 56.5 x 37 cm (as displayed) Framed: 59.7 x 40.3 cm Presented at Bobino from 24 March 1975, to mark the celebration of her fifty-year career, this retrospective revue accompanied the artist’s triumphant return to one of the leading venues of Parisian music hall. On 9 April, her final performance ended with a standing ovation, lending this brief run of performances a historic significance. Joséphine Baker passed away three days later, on 12 April 1975, whilst the show, still running, was fully booked for the following weeks. A promotional item that has become a memento, the poster thus bears witness to a major moment in the history of the performing arts.
