Austrian Vice-Admiral; served as Austrian Minister for Trade from 1865 to 1867.
He is also famous for having commanded the SMS Novara’s round-the-world expedition from 1857 to 1859. This was the first and most significant scientific expedition undertaken by the Imperial and Royal Navy of the Austrian Empire.
The Emperor of Austria organised this expedition to demonstrate the power of the crown. It set sail from Trieste in April 1857. Fourteen of the forty-four guns had been left ashore to make more room for the scientific collections.
