Description
ÉMILE CAMPARDON (1837–1915) Madame de La Poupelinière’s Fireplace. Paris: Charavay frères, 1880. 14 x 10.5 cm. A print run of 233 numbered copies. Copy no. 172 on Holland paper. Bound in morocco leather. First edition of this piquant episode from 18th-century romantic history, illustrated with an etched frontispiece by Greux. Marshal de Richelieu, who was in love with Madame de La Poupelinière, the former actress Mimi Dancourt, had ingeniously rented a building adjoining her apartment and, so as not to arouse her husband’s jealousy, would enter his mistress’s home at night via a revolving panel fitted at the back of the fireplace. Émile Campardon (1837–1915) was a French historian, archivist and writer. An archivist and head of the judicial section of the National Archives from 1857 to 1908, he was the author of numerous works. In the early 20th century, he published ‘Quatrains’ and ‘Souvenirs d’un archiviste’. Intended for a circle of friends, these extremely rare volumes contain amusing and irreverent portraits of 19th-century archivists.
