Otto von Bismarck (1815–1898)
A Prussian politician and statesman, Bismarck dominated German and European affairs from the 1860s to the 1890s.
During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, Bismarck was the architect of the ‘Small German’ solution to the German question and of the foundation of the German Empire. As Minister-President of Prussia and the first Chancellor, he played a decisive role in shaping the policy of the new German Empire established in 1871. In 1890, differences with Emperor Wilhelm II, who had been on the throne for only two years, led to Bismarck’s dismissal.
