Description
EDVARD MUNCH (1863–1944) Signed autograph letter Addressed to his friend, the Norwegian painter Henrik Lund (1879–1935), at Tostrupgaardens Hotel, Christiania. Copenhagen, 28 February 1909. 1 page with address, postage, postmarks and a pencil inscription in another hand reading ‘Keysers gd 9 III Hamsun’ on the reverse. Rounded corners and perforated edges. Document known as a ‘letter card’. 6.5 x 12.8 cm Sheet of paper, thin card, folded in half and sealed by folding down its perforated and gummed edges, ensuring, like a letter, the confidentiality of the correspondence. It is opened by cutting along the small perforations of the dotted lines. Munch asks his friend to help him collect a painting from the Blomqvist auction house in Christiania. At the time this letter was written, Munch was preparing for his first major exhibition whilst attempting to treat his nervous disorders and alcoholism through a course of treatment at Frederiksberg Hospital in Copenhagen, under the supervision of Dr Daniel Jacobson (1861–1939), a Danish psychiatrist and professor. Munch, incidentally, painted a portrait of Jacobson. At the same time, his artistic work was finally gaining recognition: whilst he was still in hospital, he was made a Knight of the Norwegian Order of St Olaf.
