The Union of Artists’ Sports Club (C.S.U.A.) brought together actors, musicians, journalists and figures from the entertainment world around sporting activities, frequently organising sporting events and competitions. These events received extensive media coverage at the time, such as the Artists’ and Journalists’ Cycling Grand Prix, won in 1935 on the Paris–Vernon route by Maurice Goddet (a French publisher and journalist), as well as football matches, horse-riding events and tennis tournaments that brought together famous figures from the French arts scene. The magazine’s articles were often written by writers or figures from the theatre and cinema who were passionate about sport. In these two issues of the magazine, one finds, amongst other things, No. 17: a text (2 pp.) entitled ‘La Renaissance Sportive’ by Frédéric Boutet (French short-story writer and novelist), tracing the evolution of the perception of sport in France from the 19th century to the early 20th century; a round-up of the month’s events; an article entitled ‘Cycling… 1935’ by Robert Ancelin (French actor and director) and the secretary of the C.S.U.A.’s cycling section (Jan Margatt): a review of the 1934 season, a call for member riders to get involved, and the programme for the 1935 season; an article on the horse rally held on 19 March 1935 in the Forest of Saint Germain, featuring a photograph of the winners; the newsletter ‘Billet de Service’ containing internal announcements (weddings, new members, changes of address, name changes, donor members, telephone numbers (updates)), dental and medical care (doctors offering preferential rates to Club members), athletics and football (training information); - No. 18: an article on the ‘Koval Athletics Cup’, a friendly sporting competition between the C.S.U.A. and the Association of Sports Writers, reporting the results and illustrated with a photograph; an article entitled ‘Tennis’ summarising the results and competitions of the C.S.U.A.’s tennis season; the ‘Service Notice’ page containing internal announcements (new members, changes of address and telephone number, deaths, births, marriages, honours and donors). René Renouard-Larivière, born René Kovalsky, known as René Koval (1885–1936) French singer and actor, appointed Knight of the Legion of Honour on 30 March 1935.
