By combining Hebrew letters, lines and colours, he created dynamic works that straddled the line between abstraction and figuration. Born in Nice, he earned his living producing lithographs for posters, magazine covers and postage stamps. A jazz enthusiast, he painted portraits of many famous musicians, including Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Thelonious Monk. In 1959, he produced a profile portrait of Dalida, as well as those of Martine Carol and Philippe Clay. In 1962, in collaboration with Jean Cocteau, he painted numerous gouaches and an oil painting on the theme of ‘The Age of Aquarius’. In 1963, he met Pablo Picasso, and a great friendship blossomed between the young artist and the old master. He also illustrated around thirty stamps for the French Post Office. He designed the logo for the French Judicial Police, which combines the head of a man with that of a tiger. In 1982, he produced the art book ‘Les Illuminations de Rimbaud’, which was awarded the Aigle d’Or, one of the highest international honours bestowed upon an art book.
