Ted Saucier was a Canadian-American advertising executive in charge of public relations at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York.
His cocktail guide ‘Bottoms Up’ remains a seminal work of the mid-20th century, both for its recipes and its pin-up illustrations.
In addition to its 780 recipes, the book covers in detail every aspect of the art of drinking, preparing and serving drinks. ‘Bottoms Up’ also contains advice on mixing drinks, a glossary of bar terms, a table of standard glass sizes, photographs of the appropriate glassware for cocktails, wines and spirits, and a list of national toasts from 38 countries. The volume also includes a chapter on food and wine pairing, as well as a detailed table of vintages compiled by Claude C. Philippe, maître d’hôtel at the Waldorf-Astoria.
The beautiful, waterproof, colour-lithographed binding was designed by Al Dorne, former president of the Society of Illustrators. In addition to the colour marginal decorations by Russell Patterson, the book features full-page colour illustrations by such eminent artists as Arthur William Brown, Gilbert Bundy, Robert Bushnell, Earl Cordrey, Bradshaw Crandell, Phil Dormont, Al Dorne, John Falter, James Montgomery Flagg, John La Gatta, Russell Patterson and Ben Stahl.
