Description
JOHN SPEED (1551/1552–1629) A Newe Mape of Tartary [A New Map of Tartary]. London, 1626 51.8 x 39.6 cm. An uncoloured engraved map in the ‘figured map’ style, featuring vignettes of towns, including Astrakhan and Samarkand, and eight figures in traditional dress. The map covers the region stretching from Lake Baikal through present-day Manchuria and Siberia, to the north of the Great Wall of China. The vignettes depict important cities along the Silk Road: Astrakhan, Samarkand and Cambalu, the capital of Cathay. Also depicted are the Kingdom of China and the wall separating it from Cathay, with the inscription ‘A wall 400 leagues long, built between the mountain valleys by the King of China to defend against Tartar invasions’. The English text on the reverse offers a fascinating description of the regions. The title cartouche, intended for a dedication, has been left blank. Map mounted on archival paper, 39.5 x 51.5 cm. At the buyer’s request, we shall be happy to provide a general report on the condition of the lot described above. However, as we are not professional conservators or restorers, we strongly advise potential buyers to carry out their own inspection or to consult a specialist of their choice to obtain a full assessment of the lot’s condition. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSION REGARDING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD ‘AS IS’, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE PUBLISHED IN THE CATALOGUE.
