Description
HERMAN MOLL (1654–1732), JOHN BOWLES Map of Moscovy, Poland, Little Tartary and the Black Sea [Map of Moscovy, Poland, Little Tartary and the Black Sea]. London, 1729–1730 Copperplate engraving, hand-coloured in watercolour; mounted on modern paper. 62.5 x 98 cm. This map was drawn by Herman Moll (1654–1732), a renowned London-based geographer and cartographer, and published in 1730 by John and Thomas Bowles. It is notable for its detailed depiction of Russia, Poland, neighbouring territories and the Black Sea region. A coloured outline delineates the territories. The map reflects the geopolitical situation in Eastern Europe and Western Asia in the early 18th century, following the era of Peter the Great, when Muscovy definitively took the form of the Russian Empire. It highlights important regions such as Muscovy, Poland and Little Tartary (a historical region north of the Black Sea) and carefully indicates major cities, rivers and geographical features. In the bottom right-hand corner, a cartouche featuring numerous figures depicts a portrait of Peter the Great beneath the double-headed eagle, surrounded by angels trumpeting the victories of Peter I. The map also features a cartouche labelled ‘The Northern Part of Russia’, showing the course of the Volga, the mouth of the Don and the region bordering the White Sea. Among the map’s notable features are the detailed inscriptions and explanations provided by Moll himself. The map forms part of the atlas considered to be Herman Moll’s most impressive work.
