Moscow: The University Press of N. Novikov, 1786–1787. Part 2: [Vladimir, an epic poem. The Fruits of Knowledge, a didactic poem]. – [2], 264 pp.; 25.5 x 20 cm. Pagination errors. Late 20th-century half-leather binding imitating a period binding. Good condition. Book block slightly trimmed, slight soiling. Ownership inscription on the title page: ‘From the books of Arseni, Archbishop of Rostov and Yaroslavl’. The ‘Epic Works’ were published only once, by Novikov in 1786–1787. The reference to a second edition on the title page does not apply to the collection as a whole, but to the individual works it contains. This edition was published during the lifetime of Mikhail Matveevich Kheraskov (1733–1807), a writer and statesman, and a leading figure of Russian classicism. Bibliography: SK XVIII, no. 8037. Provenance: Archbishop Arseni (born V.I. Verechtchaguine; 1736–1799), bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, Archbishop of Yaroslavl and Rostov. He possessed a personal library of several thousand volumes, published mainly in foreign languages in Europe and Russia, the majority of which are now held in the museum-archives of Yaroslavl and Rostov. It was thanks to Vereshchagin that his close friend A.I. Musin-Pushkin came to own the manuscript of the ‘Tale of Igor’s Campaign’.
