[4], LXI, 496 pp.: ill.; 12 plates; 34.5 x 25.5 cm. With 226 illustrations in the text and 12 plates. Contemporary half-leather binding. Good condition. Wear to the binding, a tear along the back endpaper, slight soiling, foxing, and a bookseller’s label on the back endpaper. Coat-of-arms ex-libris of the English archaeologist, art historian and Byzantinist David Talbot Rice (1903–1972) on the endpaper. A seminal and unrivalled work in its field by Nikolai Vasilievich Pokrovsky (1848–1917), one of the founders of Russian ecclesiastical archaeology and a historian of Christian art, who sets out to explain, from the perspective of ecclesiastical archaeology, the depictions of the Gospel narrative in Byzantine and Russian art. The author analyses in detail the development of the major themes of Christianity based on the earliest Byzantine and Slavic artefacts: catacomb paintings, icons, frescoes, illuminated manuscripts and others.
