This edition was published during the lifetime of Alexander Alexandrovich Vassiliev (1867–1953), an eminent Byzantinist and Arabist, and professor at the University of Yuryev. In 1901, he defended his master’s thesis, ‘Political Relations between Byzantium and the Arabs under the Amorian Dynasty’, and in 1902 his doctoral thesis, ‘Political Relations between Byzantium and the Arabs under the Macedonian Dynasty (867–959)’.
After the Revolution, he lived in exile. His comprehensive works on the history of Byzantium gained international recognition, ranking amongst the most important in the field of Byzantine studies worldwide, and were reprinted numerous times in various languages.
