Description
CHILDER N.K. (1842–1902) Imperator Pavel Pervyy. Istoriko-biograficheskiy ocherk [Emperor Paul I. A Historical and Biographical Essay]. With portraits, views, plans and autographs. St Petersburg: A.S. Suvorin, 1901. [8], 606 pp., [33 of 34] plates, facsimiles; 29.5 x 20 cm. Contemporary half-leather binding. Leather spine with raised bands, decorated with gilt metal fittings and leather corners; patterned paper on the covers and endpapers. Very good condition. Slight wear to the binding; one plate missing. Super-ex-libris in gilt, ‘P.K.’, at the foot of the spine. The rarest volume in the series of imperial biographies by the eminent historian Nikolai Karlovich Childer (1842–1902). He was one of the first scholars to examine the life of Emperor Paul I, the study of whose biography was long tacitly forbidden in the Russian Empire. To write this book, Childer gathered a considerable body of documents, contemporary accounts, letters and reports, and painted an objective portrait of one of Russia’s most controversial autocrats. This seminal work traces the Emperor’s life day by day, from birth to death, and provides an accurate account of Paul I’s reign, reflecting the full complexity of his rule.
