Description
OGONIOK [THE LITTLE FLAME]. 1910 [FULL YEAR] A weekly illustrated, artistic and literary magazine. St Petersburg: S.M. Propper, 1899–1918. Year 1910: issues 1 to 52, except issue 20. Issues 3 and 10 have been bound twice. Contemporary half-leather binding. Spine decorated with the title, the year of publication and the bookplate ‘P.B.’ in gilt letters. Scuffing on the spine, leather missing from the corners of the covers, soiling and slight damage to the paper covering the lower cover and the endpapers. The body of the book is in good condition, with slight traces of damp on the gutter edge. The missing pages from certain issues have been replaced with high-quality modern facsimiles (nos. 8, 10, 12, 13, 16, 17, 40, 42, 45 and 51). The magazine features photographic reports on the first international aviation competitions held in Russia, notably the exploits of the aviators Popov and the Baroness de Laroche. It also covers the great St Petersburg–Kiev–Moscow motor rally, in which Prince Murat and Princess Dolgorukaya, amongst others, took part; the accession to the British throne of George V (cousin of Emperor Nicholas II) and the grand mourning ceremonies in London, which brought together the European ruling elite on the eve of the First World War; as well as the official chronicle of the life of the Russian imperial family at the height of the Empire’s stability, before the global upheavals that were to come. The volume also contains stories published during the lifetimes of A. Avertchenko, Teffi, Sasha Chorny and Leonid Andreyev, as well as works by poets of the new generation. Issues 46 and 47 are devoted to the death and funeral of Leo Tolstoy in Astapovo and Yasnaya Polyana.
