Description
BENOIS, A.N. (1870–1960) Pushkin, A.S. *Mednyy vsadnik* [The Bronze Horseman]; illustrated by A. Benois. Pushkin, A. *Der Reiter aus Erz*. Munich: Orchis Verlag, 1922. 40 pp.: ill.; 24 x 16 cm. In German. Illustrations enhanced with hand-painted watercolours. Publisher’s illustrated hardback with illustrated dust jacket. Very good condition. Slight rubbing, small tears and losses to the edges of the dust jacket. Benois worked on this series for many years. The first version of the illustrations was produced in 1903 (in Rome and St Petersburg); S.P. Diaghilev acquired them and published them in the first issue of the journal ‘Mir iskousstva’ in 1904. In 1905, in Versailles, the artist reworked six of the drawings and added a frontispiece. Benois created the third and final version of the series in 1916, then supplemented it with new drawings in 1921–1922: it was this version that was published in Munich. Orchis Publishers was founded by the Russian émigré Woldemar (Vladimir Frantsevich) Klein. The book was published simultaneously in Russian and German (translated by Johannes von Guenther).
