BENOIS, A.N. (1870–1960)
Pushkin, A.S. *Mednyy vsadnik. Peterburgskaya povest’* [*The Bronze Horseman. A St Petersburg Tale*]; illustrated by A. Benois. Munich: Orchis, 1922.

Illustrated composite cardboard binding by the publisher. Good condition. Slight soiling to the binding.
Contemporary dedication on the flyleaf: ‘To my dear Churik, you must remain Russian and study Great Russia, from the time of the great Tsar Peter, as Pushkin sang of it. You must learn everything by heart. Your Dad, who loves you with all his heart. 19 30/10 30. From Berlin’.
Benois worked on this series for many years. The first version of the illustrations was produced in 1903 (in Rome and St Petersburg); S.P. Diaghilev acquired it and published it in the first issue of the journal ‘Mir iskousstva’ in 1904. In 1905, in Versailles, the artist reworked six of the drawings and added a frontispiece. Benois created the third and final version of the series in 1916, then supplemented it with new drawings in 1921–1922: it was this version that was published in Munich.
Orchis Publishers was founded by the Russian émigré Woldemar (Vladimir Frantsevich) Klein. The book was published simultaneously in Russian and German (translated by Johannes von Guenther).
