Description
MARCHAK S.IA. (1887–1964) Yashchik-rasskazchik: Zagadki [The Storytelling Box: Riddles]. Leningrad: State Publishing House, 1928. [12] pp.: ill.; 9.5 x 14.5 cm. Illustrations by E. Dorfman and B. Tatarinov. With the publisher’s illustrated dust jacket. Good condition. Slight rubbing, traces of rust from the staples. A pop-up book with two-colour illustrations: on each double-page spread, a red drawing is printed over a blue one. To reveal the riddle and its answer, the book came with sheets of coloured transparent paper (not preserved). The illustrations were created jointly by Elizaveta Grigorievna Dorfman (1899–1942) and Boris Fyodorovich Tatarinov, who published several books of this type together: ‘Where is the cat?’ (1929), ‘Blue Riddles – Red Answers’ (1929), ‘What Is It?’ (1929). E.G. Dorfman studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under K.S. Petrov-Vodkin, worked as an illustrator and produced illustrations and posters in the Suprematist and Cubist styles. She died during the Siege of Leningrad. At the buyer’s request, we shall be happy to provide a general report on the condition of the lot described above. However, as we are not professional conservators or restorers, we strongly advise potential buyers to carry out their own inspection or to consult a specialist of their choice to obtain a full assessment of the lot’s condition.
