Description
DOUKELSKI B.CH. (1886–not before 1940) Sonety: 1923–1924 [Sonnets: 1923–1924]. Paris: [Ia. Povolotski et Cie; Imprimerie Navarre], 1924. 371 pp.; 19.2 x 12.5 cm. Print run of 500 copies. Copy no. 418. With the publisher’s illustrated dust jacket. Cover, frontispiece and headband by the engraver I. Lebedev. Very good condition. Scuffing and soiling on the cover, minor foxing on the edges of the cover and on the edges of the pages. Pages largely uncut. Benedikt Chmoulevitch Doukelski-Dikler (1886 – after 1940), a poet of the Silver Age and the Russian emigration, cousin of the famous Futurist poet Benedikt Livchits. He lived in France; all trace of him is lost after 1940. His collection *Sonnets* has gone down in literary history largely thanks to the scathing criticism of the young Vladimir Nabokov, who described Doukelski’s verses as an ‘illiterate jumble of words’ and ‘powerless clichés’. First edition. At the buyer’s request, we shall be happy to provide a general report on the condition of the lot described above.
