Description
NESMELOV, A. (1889–1945) Krovavyy otblesk: stikhi [A Bloody Glimmer: Poems]. Harbin: [n.p.], 1928. 32 pp.; 18 x 13 cm. With the publisher’s printed dust jacket. Very good condition. Slight scuffing and soiling to the cover, creases along the edges. Arseni Nesmelov (pseudonym of Arseni Ivanovich Mitropolski; 1889–1945), Russian poet, officer in the Imperial Army and later in Kolchak’s army. In 1924, he fled the USSR by crossing the Chinese border and settled in Harbin, Manchuria, where for over twenty years he was rightly regarded as ‘the finest Russian poet in China’. He corresponded with Marina Tsvetaeva, who wished to publish his poem ‘Across the Ocean’. In August 1945, when Soviet troops entered Harbin, he was arrested and taken to the USSR, where he died almost immediately of a cerebral haemorrhage in the transit prison at Grodekovo station. He left behind vivid accounts of literary life in Vladivostok in the early 1920s, which remain unpublished in their entirety, and was the author of more than a dozen collections published in Moscow, Vladivostok, Harbin and Shanghai. Regarding his first collection, *Corniches* (1924), Boris Pasternak wrote briefly to his wife: ‘Good verses’.
