ILLYUSTRIROVANNAYA ROSSIYA [ILLUSTRATED RUSSIA] – THE CENTENARY OF A.S. PUSHKIN 1) A.S. Pushkin i ego epokha [A.S. Pushkin and his era]: [special issue]. Paris: La Russie illustrée, 1937. 144, [4] pp.: ill.; 32 x 25 cm. With the publisher’s illustrated dust jacket. Good condition. Slight scuffing, soiling, and small tears to the spine and edges of the cover. This large special issue of ‘La Russie illustrée’ was published to coincide with the exhibition ‘Pushkin and his era’ organised by S. Lifar. It brings together articles and notes on the life and work of the great poet, facsimiles of Pushkin’s manuscripts and drawings, and reproductions of works by 19th- and 20th-century artists and sculptors (I. Aivazovsky, A. Benois, F. Bruni, M. Dobuzhinsky, D. Kardovsky, V. Tropinin, I. Levitan, C. Fabergé and others). 2) *Illyustrirovannaya Rossiya. Pushkinskiy nomer: 1837–1937* [Illustrated Russia. Pushkin Issue: 1837–1937]. No. 7 (613), 1937. 28 pp.: ill.; 32 x 25 cm. With the publisher’s illustrated dust jacket. Good condition. Slight soiling, small tears on the spine. The magazine ‘Illustrated Russia’ was founded in Paris in 1924 by Miron Petrovich Mironov, modelled on the pre-Revolutionary illustrated literary and artistic weeklies so familiar to Russian émigrés. From 1929 onwards, a free literary supplement appeared, the ‘Bibliothèque des meilleurs écrivains russes et étrangers’ (24 volumes per year). From its very inception, the greatest writers and poets of the émigré community published in its pages. It was printed on excellent coated paper, with elegant covers, several of which were designed by renowned Russian artists – F.A. Maliavin, K.A. Korovin, D. Stelletski, A.E. Yakovlev, B.V. Zvorykin, F. Rojankovsky, I.Ia. Bilibin, A.N. Benois and others. At the buyer’s request, we shall be happy to provide a general report on the condition of the lot described above.
