The magazine ‘Illustrated Russia’ was founded in Paris in 1924 by Miron Petrovich Mironov, modelled on the pre-Revolutionary illustrated literary and artistic weeklies so familiar to Russian émigrés. From 1929 onwards, a free literary supplement appeared, the ‘Bibliothèque des meilleurs écrivains russes et étrangers’ (24 volumes per year).
From its very inception, the greatest writers and poets of the émigré community published in its pages. It was printed on excellent coated paper, with elegant covers, several of which were designed by renowned Russian artists – F.A. Maliavin, K.A. Korovin, D. Stelletski, A.E. Yakovlev, B.V. Zvorykin, F. Rojankovsky, I.Ia. Bilibin, A.N. Benois and others.
