Description
MANDELSTAM, OSIP (1891–1938) Voronezhskie tetradi [Voronezh Notebooks] / [text edited, with notes and an afterword by V. Schweitzer]. [Ann Arbor]: Ardis, 1980. 139, [5] pp.: portraits, photographs; 19 x 13 cm. Print run of 2,000 copies. With the publisher’s printed dust jacket. Very good condition. Slight discolouration at the edges of the cover. The ‘Voronezh Notebooks’ bring together the poems written and composed by Mandelstam during his exile in Voronezh (1934–1937), to which he was sentenced for his epigram against Stalin: ‘We live without feeling the ground beneath our feet...’. Excerpt from the publisher’s note: ‘In this edition, the ‘Voronezh Notebooks’ are published for the first time as a complete work, as a book, in the form intended by Mandelstam himself. Most of the texts have been checked and corrected against Mandelstam’s manuscripts held at Princeton University. Several humorous poems from the Voronezh period and all the variants of ‘Verses on the Unknown Soldier’ are published here for the first time’. At the buyer’s request, we shall be happy to provide a general report on the condition of the lot described above. However, as we are not professional conservators or restorers, we strongly advise potential buyers to carry out their own inspection or to consult a specialist of their choice to obtain a full assessment of the lot’s condition. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSION REGARDING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD ‘AS IS’, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE PUBLISHED IN THE CATALOGUE.
