Description
STRELETS [THE SAGITTARIUS] [five complete years] A monthly journal of literature, art, and social and political thought; editor-in-chief A.D. Glezer. New York; Paris: Tretia volna, 1984–1988. 1984, nos. 1–12; 1985, nos. 1–12; 1986, nos. 1–12; 1987, nos. 1–12; 1988, nos. 1–10, 12. 30.5 x 23 cm. Issue No. 11 from 1988 is missing. 59 issues in total, all in the publisher’s original covers, in five collector’s folders (33 x 24.5 cm). Very good condition. The journal ‘Strelets’ was founded by Alexander Glezer in New York in 1984 by the publishing house ‘Tretia volna’ (Third Wave). ‘Strelets’ published authors such as Vladimir Maximov, Vladimir Voinovich, Georgy Vladimov, Joseph Brodsky, Genrikh Sapguir, Igor Kholine and others. According to S. Yurienen, ‘there is something symbolic about the fact that the magazine was launched in 1984, the year of Orwell. At that time, on both sides of the border, an aesthetic totalitarianism reigned over Russian literature. Anything that strayed from the norm was stifled, both in the USSR and amongst the émigrés. An anti-totalitarian and resolutely pluralist publication, ‘Strelets’ shattered the concrete in a single blow. New literature, condemned to underground publication at home or to foreign languages in exile, was able for the first time to express itself freely in its native Russian language’ (‘Strelets’, 1994, no. 2). At the buyer’s request, we shall be happy to provide a general report on the condition of the lot described above.
