Iraïda Ivanovna Vandellos-Liogkaïa (1932–2020), a Russian poet of Latvian origin, translator, journalist and radio presenter. From 1963 to 1987, she worked at ‘Voice of America’, as a correspondent in California and then in New York for the station’s Russian service. Dovlatov and Vandellos were colleagues in many respects: he was one of the founders and editor-in-chief of the newspaper ‘Novy amerikanets’ (The New American) as well as a presenter on ‘Radio Svoboda’, where he most likely conducted several interviews with Vandellos. Sergei Dovlatov (1941–1990), a writer and journalist from Leningrad, did not publish a single book in his own country during his lifetime but, after his death, became one of the most widely read Russian authors of the second half of the 20th century.
