Description
[JAPAN] KUSAKABE KIMBEI. Photographs of Japan. Meiji period (1868–1912). Japan as seen by Kusakabe Kimbei: 48 ‘Yokohama-shashin’ or hand-coloured albumen prints. Oblong quarto, black lacquered and inlaid wooden binding; front cover decorated with a narrative scene (a genre scene featuring a bridge and cherry trees, with a man smoking under a tree), and back cover featuring a floral design with a butterfly; gilt edges. 48 photographs, colour albumen prints (20 x 25.5 cm) mounted on 24 cardboard leaves. Covers detached, spine missing. Minor damage to the covers, some loss to the back cover. Slight yellowing of the leaves. Binding worn. A charming album from the 1890s bringing together colour-enhanced photographs by Kusakabe Kimbei (1841–1934). The photographs capture traditional Japan, featuring architectural beauty, figures in period costume, gardens and genre scenes; most are captioned and numbered on the negative. From around 1860 to 1900, ‘Yokohama-shashin’ (Japanese albumen prints sold in Yokohama) became very popular amongst tourists discovering a Japan that had until then been largely closed off to the outside world. Notable photographers included Felix Beato and his assistant Kusakabe Kimbei, who opened his own studio in Yokohama in 1881. An excellent album.
