Born in 1937, François Bricq spent part of his childhood, during the Second World War, in Villiers-Adam, where he attended primary school. Despite the still rural setting of his home at that time, the drawings he produced in abundance from that period onwards mainly featured cars, aeroplanes and scenes of war.
Having obtained a DES in geography, followed by a CAPES in 1969, he went on to teach at a secondary school in the Paris region, and later in Paris itself.
He regarded this early phase of his professional life as ‘a wrong turn’ which temporarily distanced him from drawing and painting; he returned to these around 1967 and, particularly following the events of May 1968, began producing posters, screen prints and paintings.
He became involved in the ‘La Jeune Peinture’ movement and officially left teaching in 1978. He then set up his studio in Montmartre and devoted himself to painting. During this period, his artistic interest centred on the reflections produced by metallic surfaces, particularly those of aircraft fuselages, propellers and car bodies.
In 1982, one of the ace pilots of the Second World War, Colonel Edmond Petit, took notice of his paintings of aeroplanes, which led to his appointment as Painter to the Air Force, a role he held until 2005.
He exhibited regularly from 1971 to 2005, after which he worked exclusively for a number of major European collectors.
