Description
PAINTING “COMPOSITION” by Oscar DOMINGUEZ (1906–1957) Mixed media on paper, signed lower right. Bears a stamp on the reverse reading “Étude de Maître Rheims, auctioneer, Oscar Dominguez’s studio’ Provenance: Private collection Sale from Oscar Dominguez’s studio, Maître Maurice Rheims, 14 November 1960 Dimensions: approx. 65 x 50 cm Good condition In 1928, he exhibited his works for the first time on his native island, before settling in France a year later. The 1930s saw the emergence of his first surrealist paintings. Appreciated by André Breton for ‘the fiery, fragrant whir of the Canary Islands’ that he infused into his work, he became a full member of the Surrealist movement in 1934 and exhibited alongside Arp, Brauner, Chirico and Dalí until 1940. Metamorphosis, dreams, eroticism and the absurd are all elements that make up his compositions, rendering his paintings highly distinctive works that are complex to explain and understand, as evidenced by this enigmatic ‘Double Unicorn’, which seems to defy all logic or narrative. Like Max Ernst and his ‘grattages’, Oscar Dominguez goes beyond reality.
